13. Trainwreck

Step Brothers
Universal Pictures

It’s brave to name a movie Trainwreck. Like naming a song “Deafeningly Awful” you set up critics for the easiest and cruellest reviews imaginable. But alas Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck is anything but a disaster.

Amy Schumer writes and stars in this 2015 comedy blockbuster, with comedy powerhouse Judd Apatow directing. Whilst Schumer plays a magazine journalist (which along with Lawyer, PA and Baker are seemingly the only jobs women in rom-coms can do) there is nothing clichéd about this film. Schumer takes a fresh approach to the rom-com format and with the high-profile cameo of LeBron James and star comedic turn from John Cena, Schumer and Apatow create a fiercely fresh, sharp and hilarious comedy that integrates Apatow’s hallmark blend of seriousness and comedy. This is a well-written story that never forgets it’s a comedy.

Also enjoy the film within a film starring Daniel Radcliffe and Marisa Tomei. Trainwreck is two films for the price of one.
