5. Ghost In The Shell

Ghost In The Shell is a 1995 anime film based on the Japanese manga by Masamune Shirow. It is not to be confused with the dreadful 2017 live-action remake starring Scarlett Johansson - which should be avoided at all costs.

It's set in a futuristic Japan where the human body can be augmented by mechanical components, including a shell casing for the brain that can be inhabited by an external consciousness or "ghost".

This, of course, causes all sorts of security problems, and the main narrative is a complex tangle of mechanical espionage and philosophical examination of what it means to be human in a technically advanced and augmented society.

With incredible cyberpunk visuals, using both hand-drawn and 3D animation to marvellous effect, and with a spectacularly atmospheric score, Ghost In The Shell is essential viewing.
