15 Best Ever Robot Sci-Fi Movies

9. Metropolis

In 1927, Fritz Lang's Metropolis made waves with its incredible special effects depicting a dystopian future society where the wealthy elite enjoy a luxurious city life while the subterranean working-class toil to keep the lights on.

The story centres around Freder - son of the city's wealthy master - who becomes infatuated with Maria, an icon among the workers. Together they attempt to end the current regime and free the workers from their lives of slavery.

The iconic Maschinenmensch or "Machine Man" is central to the story, but to reveal why would spoil the story.

The film's impact on audiences may have lessened over the decades, but any list of the best ever robot movies would be incomplete without Metropolis. It remains a visually impressive feat of science fiction filmmaking and its influence is still felt to this day.
