8. Westworld

Westworld Yul Brynner

Westworld, written and directed by Michael Crichton back in 1973, depicts a futuristic theme park filled with androids designed to emulate and act out periods of history such as the Wild West or Medieval times.

Inevitably, these sophisticated androids malfunction, putting the safety of the guests and staff at risk, with tragic consequences. One particular android "The Gunslinger" becomes the main villain, leading to an exciting final showdown.

Westworld is a fantastic film developed around a quite brilliant concept and it was nominated for the prestigious Hugo, Nebula and Saturn awards - evidence enough of the high standard of science fiction on offer.

This idea of a technologically advanced theme park gone wrong would, of course, lead Crichton to write Jurassic Park and later provide the inspiration for an excellent episode of The Simpsons.
