15 Best Hans Zimmer Film Soundtracks

14. Sherlock Holmes

Guy Ritchie's and Robert Downey Jr's take on the legendary detective may not have been to everyone's taste but it can be in no doubt that Zimmer's soundtrack was spot on for Sherlock Holmes.

Ritchie had actually used Zimmer's score from the The Dark Knight (more on that later) as temporary music during editing his film, before the composer had even signed on.

In order to capture the bohemian nature of Holmes' character, Zimmer used a variety of unconventional and broken instruments, to give the soundtrack its distinct sound. The secret to his success? A broken piano:

"I thought, rather than use big drums what would a piano sound like if you dropped it down a flight of stairs? We rented 20th Century Fox’s underground car park one Sunday and did hideous things to a piano."

Best Track: Discombobulate

Played during the opening action sequences, this track helps set up the wild ride Holmes and Watson are about to embark on.
