15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2018
5. Thoroughbreds
No doubt set to become one of the indie darlings of 2018, Cory Finley's Thoroughbreds, which also happens to be home to the late, great Anton Yelchin's final screen performance, is nothing short of spellbinding.
It's one of those films where "not much happens" for the bulk of the runtime, as most scenes focus solely on the growing relationship between two girls, one a privileged teen who hates her overbearing step-father, the other a genuine sociopath who lives every day imitating the emotions of a real person.
The development of their friendship is always captivating though, and considering how twisted both are in their own individual ways, it's no surprise that their combined interests turn to petty murder pretty quickly.
Even better, those preceding quiet, plotting scenes all pay off in a jaw-dropping climax that lingers on a single shot while untold horrors happen just offscreen.
