15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2018
6. Ghost Stories
It's incredibly difficult to make an anthology story work. Inevitably, whether it's something like V/H/S or the recent The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, there's always a segment or two that doesn't quite live up to the quality of the rest. Fortunately, Ghost Stories manages to mostly side-step this regular issue by concentrating its narrative down to three tight tales with a wraparound that only makes these isolated shorts all the more impactful.
Each segment varies in sub-genre and tone, but they just about maintain a steady mark of quality, structured more like horrifying magic tricks than outright horror movies. Of course, considering the flick's League of Gentlemen heritage, there's some pitch-black humour tucked in between the scares as well, which only serves to disarm you in time for a perfectly-timed jump.
It's that narrative throughline which keeps the movie so compelling though, and the final reveal, as mad as it is impactful, wraps everything up in neat bow that inspires nothing short of an instant rewatch.
