13. Before I Wake

One of the most under-appreciated subgenres in the horror world is dark fantasy, pulling in tropes and characters usually reserved for stories about heroes and magic and dumping them in a far more gritty, real plot.

Before I Wake is one of the best examples of this subgenre being executed wonderfully, blending together the creative imaginations of archetypal fantasy stories with traditional supernatural horror elements. The story of a couple who adopt a young boy named Cody Morgan following the death of their son, Before I Wake sets everything up in a traditional way by showing the audience Cody's ability to bring his dreams to life and introducing the sinister Canker Man as the supposed main antagonist.

However, the film contains so many more layers to it than just that, and the film's climax hammers home the themes of loss and innocence wonderfully. Before I Wake currently holds an approval rating of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 68/100 on Metacritic, with lead actors Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane and Jacob Tremblay all doing an amazing job in carrying so many raw and powerful moments throughout the story.
