12. Apostle
Period horror film Apostle takes place in 1905 and follows Thomas Richardson as he attempts to infiltrate a sinister cult who has kidnapped his sister, Jennifer. Michael Sheen portrays Malcolm Howe, the leader of the cult, and Mark Lewis Jones comes in as the cult's brutal second in command, helping to immediately establish the chilling, mysterious tone carried right the way through the run time.
Gareth Evans does a great job behind the camera in directing a film that swings from a '70s styled murder mystery, a Saw/Hostel-like torture fest, an overly brutal slasher flick and then to a supernatural ghost story. A tale of faith and inner strength at its core, the journey that Thomas goes on throughout the film is as gripping as it is terrifying to watch.
Apostle casts some serious Wicker Man vibes with its rural cultist-filled locations across northern Wales and mystery elements, but throws in a whole host of modern scare tactics to help it stand out as its own film. It currently holds an approval rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic overall score of 62/100.
