4. The Omen

Easily one of the downright creepiest films on this list - not least because it basically presents the fully formed Machiavellian masterplan of an adult in a child's body - the original Omen is the quintessential "deranged child" horror movie. Directed by a man who would later make his name in action films (the Lethal Weapon series), Richard Donner's 1976 film is helped immeasurably by the gravitas of star Gregory Peck, who lends a calm, albeit bemused head to proceedings. The Omen has one of the strongest openings of any of the films on this list (the fate of Damien's nurse) setting the viewer up for a ride unlikely to be forgotten anytime soon. As with so many other films on show here (especially the top ten), The Omen has been subjected to inferior sequels and remakes, but it's the original which has remained prevalent, if not for the things already mentioned, than at least for its ruining of the name "Damien" for sons and mothers everywhere.
