15 Best Horror Movies To Watch On Netflix This Halloween
13. Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Far and away the best Freddy Krueger installment since the original Nightmare on Elm Street (though there's a case to be made for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, which saw Craven return for a co-writing credit along with future Shawshank Redemption director, Frank Darabont ), Wes Craven returned to the series he created after watching it be butchered by others for the best part of a decade. Opting for a new meta stance, maestro Craven injected some much needed vitality into the waning franchise, setting the story outside of the dream-realm to instead incorporate it into "real life", with Craven himself starring, as well as Heather Langenkamp, the original's "final girl". Craven sets it up so that they're all movie-exec. types planning a new Freddie picture, imbuing New Nightmare with the type of nod-nod, wink-wink irony that would make it feel so fresh to the canon. Obviously not on par with the influential original, New Nightmare nevertheless restored some pride to the ever-increasing Krueger franchise, and it earns a place on this list for doing so.
