Rich or poor, man or woman, Marvel or DC, we all love a great fight scene. It’s what cinema is all about, since the medium excels at sequences of people beating the crap out of each other or blowing things up. 2016 was no different in this regard, with everything from low budget action flicks to glossy comic book movies containing scenes of people ripping each other to shreds all in the name of our entertainment.

There were some world-class superhero clashes and sickening lo-fi beatdowns between ordinary folks. Filmmakers found innovative, creative ways for characters to maim and destroy each other onscreen, and audiences lapped it up eagerly.

Gathered here are some of the best movie fights of 2016, spanning every possible genre and featuring the likes of Batman, a hungry bear and a whole load of hapless henchmen. Be prepared, things are about to get very bloody indeed...

15. Chirrut Imwe V Stormtroopers – Rogue One

Donnie Yen is a legendary martial arts star, so it only made sense to give him a badass fight to underline how cool his Rogue One character is. Chirrut Imwe is the blind rebel who’s quite strong with the force, so when the rebels run into some trouble with stormtroopers he emerges from the crowd to give them assistance.

He then proceeds to take the troopers all down with his staff and lightening fast movements, which are made all the more impressive by the fact that’s really how fast Yen can move. It’s a bit strange to see a proper martial arts fight in a Star Wars film, but it helps cement Chirrut as one of the best fighters in the series.

Yen will be seen next in xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage, so let’s hope his Hollywood hot streak will continue a bit longer.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
