Coming from Todd Haynes, the controversial helmer responsible for Carol and Far From Heaven, you can be sure Mark Ruffalo vehicle Dark Waters won't be a comfortable watch.
After all, Haynes made his name via the deeply unsettling banned film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story.
Fortunately though, the director's comfort with uncomfortable subjects is put to great use by this bright, brilliant legal thriller which follows the true life tale of Ruffalo's heroic lawyer, a more formal Erin Brokovich who mounts a case against chemical manufacturing giant DuPont for poisoning a town's water supply.
A perfect marriage of its star's commendable political awareness and its director's unique style, this is a thriller not to be missed.
