Paul Dano's directorial debut sees him adapting Richard Ford's 1990 novel of the same name, which explores the dissolving marriage of a couple (Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal) in 1960s Montana from the perspective of their young son (The Visit's Ed Oxenbould).

Filmmaking rarely comes this assured, but considering that Dano's worked with some of the world's very best directors in the past, his skill shouldn't be terribly surprising.

Many critics commended Dano for tackling a challenging book as his first project, managing to meld the novel's lighter and darker elements together in an emotionally gratifying coming-of-age drama.
