12. Tully

Jason Reitman's (Juno, Up in the Air) new film Tully made an unexpected appearance at Sundance as the festival's secret film, and it's a pleasure to report that Reitman appears to have redeemed himself after his last two movies (Labor Day and Men, Women and Children) were critical duds.

Tully, the tale of an overworked single mother (Charlize Theron) and the bond she forms with her titular night nanny (Mackenzie Davis) has been largely deemed a major return to form for Reitman, as well as his frequent screenwriter collaborator Diablo Cody.

Theron and Davis have also been squarely praised for their performances, working from a script that's funny but also unafraid to dig into deeper aspects of motherhood and being a woman in the modern world.

Whether it could be a future awards contender remains to be seen, but it's an encouraging start.

Tully is in cinemas April 20th.
