Comedian Bo Burnham makes a searing directorial debut with this agonisingly true-to-life coming-of-age dramedy, girded by an excellent performance from young lead Elsie Fisher.

It's arguably harder than ever to grow up right now, what with social media making adolescence even more of an ordeal than it already is, and according to some critics, Burnham may well have crafted the definitive film about millennial youth.

Though it delves deep into the nightmarish aspects of being a teen of the current generation, Burnham's deftly-balanced script reportedly also mines plenty of sweetness and good humour.

That a 27-year-old stand-up comic can so convincingly enter the head-space of a young girl half his age seems to be one of Sundance's big surprises.
