2. A Star Is Born

Ally and Jackson On Stage A Star Is Born
Warner Bros.

It is quite remarkable that the fourth iteration of this classic tale proves to be the finest, with an extraordinary directorial debut from Bradley Cooper. The fact that Cooper brings a new energy and a bold new direction for this much told tale, while also playing the lead role, is quite remarkable. Cooper plays fading Music star Jackson Maine, who stumbles upon the musical talents of the lady who will be his wife, waitress Ally Campano.

Cooper finds the perfect ally in this story through a brilliant acting and singing performance by Lady Gaga of all people, who proves a great surprise on both fronts. Hitting the high notes in front of a live audience for 'Shallow' lets the audience know that the ex pop star can really sing, but it is the depth in her portrayal as a vulnerable young lady who grows in confidence as her love stumbles that is the real surprise.

The chemistry between the lead pair is better than any previous iteration of the film, with a grounded believability in both their loves as well as their vulnerabilities. Cooper makes Jackson's descent into depression chillingly realistic, a tragic ending we all see a mile off, but hurts so much all the same.
