15 Best Romantic Films On Netflix Right Now

1. The Notebook

The Notebook
New Line Cinema

The top entry on this list, thanks to a final act that perfects everything that came before it. This bittersweet romance story follows the standard Romantic film conventions for its first two acts, following the Romeo + Juliet lite story of two young lovers who face down the issues with social status that stand in their way. The film's final act though is where this film comes into its own, with a heartbreaking twist that is every bit as impactful as The Bard's classic play.

Racheal McAdams and Ryan Gosling are great as rich girl Allie and working class boy Noah, giving their all to roles they could have performed in their sleep. Their energy and ability to portray these characters as genuinely interesting elevates the simplistic story and makes it a pleasure to be in their company, with their eventual decision to remain together proving a treat for the audience.

It is the heartbreaking finale though that elevates everything we have seen before it. The seemingly over the top and hammy nature of the love story depicted in the first two acts is justified by the fact that the story is being told by an older version of Noah. His motivation of telling the tale to his amnesiac wife so she may remember him is perhaps the most romantic moment of the movie. The moments when Allie briefly remembers her love for Noah is truly beautiful, but the aftermath of these memories proves truly harrowing stuff, and certainly brought tears to this writer.
