15 Best Romantic Films On Netflix Right Now

14. The Age Of Adaline

The Notebook
Lionsgate

It's hard to figure out why this film didn't resonate with audiences as much as expected, with Blake Lively delivering a career best performance in this Benjamin Button themed story. While Brad Pitt's protagonist gradually became younger, Lively's titular character Adaline doesn't age at all. The opening aspects of the story exploring how our protagonist came upon her non ageing abilities and various Government agencies attempts to 'study' her feel more suited to a comic book movie. Thankfully the film really picks up when exploring Adaline's romantic challenges, especially when the audience become aware of the full picture.

Having avoided the Government agents, Adaline finds herself falling for a man named Ellis, adequately played by Michiel Huisman. Lively is brilliant in displaying her inner conflict in regards her relationship with Ellis, balancing the ideas of fulfilling her heart's desires, and the varying issues that would follow when engaging in a serious relationship where she doesn't age, but her partner does.

There is an absolute corker of a twist thrown in to liven up the story, with Ellis' Father, William, revealed to have formerly been in a relationship with Adaline. Harrison Ford is in fine form as William and has some great chemistry with Lively, as the exploration of this bizarre love triangle plays out in engaging fashion.

The ending is a touch cliched, with a happily ever after feel that seems a touch out of place, but Blake Lively brings such heart to Adaline that you can't help but feel happy for the nice ending.
