13. P.S. I Love You

The Notebook
Warner Bros.

If you like your Romance movies super cheesy and having you in tears for the majority of its runtime, then this is absolutely the film for you. Starring the king of Romance films Gerard Butler alongside the near impossible to dislike Hilary Swank, this movie delivers everything one would ask for from a standard Romance flick, and absolutely nothing more. This is the ideal 'turn your brain off and have a good cry' film that may be just what we need in these troubled times.

The film follows Swank's Holly, whose world is turned upside down when her husband and love of her life Gerry dies of a brain tumour. After hiding away from the world as she mourns her lost love, Holly comes about the first of multiple letters that Gerry wrote for her before he passed. The letters give Holly a new sense of life, eventually leading her to Ireland and opening up the possibility of a second chance at love.

The film has some nice messages about overcoming adversity amongst the cheese, Hilary Swank delivering a solid performance in the lead role. Lisa Kudrow is the real star though, her energy and strong range of emotions as Holly's good friend Denise managing to bring life to the basic story and add real gravitas to Holly's new adventures.
