15 Best Sci-Fi Movies & TV Shows Of 2020 (So Far)
5. Upload
A show that gave Robbie Amell the breakout role he has long-deserved, Upload proved to be one of this year's hidden gems. Granted, this writer knew of its existence ahead of its May release, but even then, it still felt like it caught us all off-guard when it arrived. But it was a pleasant surprise, and the reason for that is simply because the show is so darn good.
Set in a world in which you can upload your consciousness into a virtual reality upon death - essentially making you immortal - 27 year-old Nathan must decide to have life-threatening surgery and risk dying, or remove the risk by going straight to 'Upload'. After choosing the latter, he finds himself transported to a strange new world full of colourful characters that are no longer living, animated AIs and a voice that gives him a new purpose in (after)life.
A spiritual successor, if you will, for The Good Place, Upload is a ridiculously witty comedy that could have worked well as an indie movie or even a romcom, but it actually thrives off its episodic format which allows it to deliver plenty of laughs alongside some meaningful drama.
