15 Best Sci-Fi Movies & TV Shows Of 2020 (So Far)
13. Underwater
We're all afraid of the unknown and Underwater wasn't afraid to remind us of it
A film set at the bottom of the ocean, it follows a crew of scientists who make their way down there (as scientists do) to study something or other and do normal scientist stuff when they end up crossing paths with a bunch of mysterious Cthulhu-like creatures that, of course, wish to do them harm.
It's essentially a modern day Alien (set underwater instead of space, obviously), utilising the terror of the unseen, unknown and, for lack of a better term, alien to inspire fear and dread in the audiences watching it. It's nowhere near as good, but it makes a decent stab at following in its footsteps, using the isolation of the crew as they helplessly get picked off in order to heighten those aforementioned emotions within us.
No, it isn't a perfect film, but it is a good popcorn flick that makes good use of atmospheric dread to move the story forward and its led by an admirably badass performance from Kristen Stewart. And for that, it deserves a place on this list (And it's not like there were many other sci-fi properties to compare it to!). Whether or not the film remains on the list come the end of the year is another thing entirely.
