6. Gigolo Joe - A.I.
As his name implies, Joe is a lover-robot in Steven Spielberg's A.I.
We first meet him just in time to see him framed for murder by one of his client's husbands, and he subsequently removes his registration tag and flees before the police can catch him.
He's an incredibly human character, helping young David navigate the anti-mecha world in which they live to try to realise his dream of becoming a real boy. Time and time again, Joe saves David, and continues to keep him safe on their journey.
It may seem odd: a sentient prostitute robot befriending a sentient robot child, but A.I. finds a way to make it heartfelt, and Gigolo Joe is a big part of that.
He's the product of an interesting world in which people must apply for a license to have children due to over-population, and he manages to handle sensitive (if thinly veiled) societal issues and still maintain an air of wholesomeness.
He may look like Robbie Rotten, but he's got a heart of gold.
