7. Newton Geiszler - Pacific Rim
Newton "Newt" Geiszler represents the everyman in 2013's Pacific Rim. If, that is, the everyman is a doctor who studies giant monsters intent on claiming the Earth.
Portrayed by the brilliantly funny Charlie Day, Newt adds a little comedy to proceedings, but he is not without a certain gravity.
Newt has a disturbing and only partly professional enthusiasm for the Kaiju. His job is to study their weakness and origins, and we see him dissecting a Kaiju while discovering that they are genetically engineered with the specific intention of attacking and colonizing Earth.
Newt remains curious and upbeat in the face of the world's approaching destruction, and he is utterly unique in his characterization as little more than a genius, manic man-child.
He also has some pretty rad tattoos, a leather jacket and is a bit of a metalhead. All in all, a pretty cool guy, if not a little touched upstairs.
