4. Logan

Baby Groot Guardians Of The Galaxy vol 2
Fox

Release Date: 3 March (UK/USA)

Opening with the brooding twang of Johnny Cash’s Hurt and looking more like gritty futuristic Western than anything else, James Mangold’s Logan looks unlike anything the X-Men franchise has trotted out before. The cinematography of John Mathieson, who also worked on X-Men: First Class, introduces a post-apocalyptic world of parched landscapes and blazing blue skies in which an older, more ravaged version of everybody’s favourite Canadian mutant has started hitting the bottle hard.

The trailer doesn’t give too much away, but if Wolverine’s weakened healing abilities and a fragile and seemingly senile Xavier are anything to go by it looks like Logan could be a rather gloomy but absorbing rumination on what happens when superheroes grow into old age and their powers start to fade.

There’s the introduction of the young, mysterious Laura Kinney aka X-23, the clone daughter of Wolverine in the comic books, and judging by a scene in which Wolverine gores his claws through some dude’s head it looks like it’s fully deserving of its R rating. If the trailer delivers on all its promises, seems Logan will be a befittingly memorable last outing for Hugh Jackman as the beloved mutant.
