11. The Circle
Release Date: 28 April (USA)
In James Ponsoldt’s The Circle, based on the book of the same name by Dave Eggers, Emma Watson stars as a graduate who lands a cushy job at a tech company that might just possibly be a stand-in for Facebook, Google or Apple led by Tom Hanks as a cult-like, Zuckerberg-Jobs hybrid figure who encourages his underlings to chant company mottos like ‘Sharing is caring’.
The trailer starts out innocent enough, more like a Facebook employee orientation video than anything else, before diverting into distinctly dystopian territory with the unveiling of some all-seeing, all-knowing invention that encourages absolute transparency from its users. Kind of like Facebook Live but all day, every day.
There’s echoes of Charlie Brooker’s hugely popular Black Mirror to the film which could never be a bad thing and even though it’s set in the not-too-distant future, in our age of all-encompassing technology and social media it’s a more than timely tale. Plus, it’s always fun to see a nice guy like Tom Hanks going against type and playing a more villainous role.
