9. Ghost In The Shell
Release Date: 31 March (UK/USA)
Based on the manga and anime series of the same name, Ghost in the Shell has already stirred up quite a bit of controversy prior to its release in a couple of months’ time. Firstly, there’s the matter of star Scarlett Johansson being about as Japanese as a California roll and secondly, that the film is being directed by Rupert Sanders whose only other film to date is 2012’s middling Snow White and the Huntsman.
Whitewashing and scandal-ridden directors aside, the film looks great so far. Visually, Sanders has nailed the cyberpunk aesthetic of the movie’s source material with some Blade Runner and The Matrix vibes thrown in for good measure.
Even with little prior knowledge of the Ghost in the Shell franchise, a sort of nude Johansson, killer geisha robots and a brief glimpse of Takeshi Kitano (best known to Western audiences as the twisted, yet sympathetic former teacher in Kinji Fukasaku’s Battle Royale) are reason enough to give it a go.
