2. The Pianist

Fury 2014
Focus Features

Based on the memoir of the same name by composer and Holocaust survivor Wladyslaw Szpilman, The Pianist has firmly established itself as a modern classic of cinema, and one of the greatest war movies ever made.

The film follows Wladyslaw (Adrien Brody) as he is separated from his family and must hide from the encroaching Nazis in the ruins of Warsaw. He witnesses the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and through both luck, rare instances of kindness and sheer force of will, he fights to keep himself alive through to the end of the conflict.

A moving portrayal of war and its devastation and anchored by an Oscar-winning performance from Adrien Brody, The Pianist is a much watch for any lover of cinema or anyone with an interest in history. Haunting, honest, and horrifying, it direction, acting and mesmerising score make it a movie masterpiece, which, like all great war films, demands to be seen.
