9. Unbroken

Fury 2014
Universal Pictures

Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie and written by the Coen Brothers, is an excellent war movie built around a powerful and heartbreaking biopic.

Jack O'Connell stars as Louis Zamperini, a former US athlete and Olympian destined for bigger things until he is suddenly thrust into World War II. Charting his days as an up-and-coming runner to his brief career as a bombardier in the air force, Unbroken is unflinching in its portrayal of war and its devastating emotional side-effects. However, it is also a measured and powerful drama detailing one man's descent into the worst of human conflict.

Shot down and stranded at sea for nearly 50 days, Zamperini ends up as a POW in Japan, subject to vicious torture and beaten down at every turn.

It's tough to watch in parts, but thanks to O'Connell's passionate performance and the real-life heroism and strength of Zamperini, it makes for a bleak but ultimately hopeful tale, and a masterpiece of modern filmmaking.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
