15 Biggest Box-Office Movie Bombs Of The Decade
2. The Lone Ranger (2013)
The Lone Ranger was the movie that proved the old guard of Hollywood stars no longer had what it took to guarantee a movie's success. In the 2000s, thanks to the popularity of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Johnny Depp was a bona-a-fide money maker, with his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow elevating the cultural status of the mediocre films.
Disney attempted to repeat the same success by casting the actor in The Lone Ranger. Reuniting the actor with Pirates director Gore Verbinski, the idea was essentially to deliver another massive tentpole with an oddball performance at the centre of it.
They quickly realised you need more than that to make hundreds of millions of dollars though, as lightning didn't strike twice and audiences avoided The Lone Ranger.
Making only $10 million more at the box office than it cost to make (not including the additional $150 million shelled out for marketing), it was reported that Disney could have lost up to $190 million on the project, more than what it cost them to make Iron Man 2.
