8. Cadillac Of The Skies (Empire Of The Sun, 1987)
Spielberg's first World War II drama features this great scene of David Lean-esque proportions. Time seems to stop for a young Christian Bale, enamoured by the beauty of flight, when he sees his favorite airplane - the American P-51 Mustang doing a low pass as a Japanese base is bombarded. The romanticism of this scene captures the essence of the film; a lost boy who does not participate in or understand the causes, details and cruelty of war. John Williams' angelic choirs underline the lad's admiration and detachment from reality in what is without a doubt the most memorable moment of this great film.
