15 So-Called 'Must See' Films In 2015 (That Might Actually Be Worth Watching)

The Hype: Neill Blomkamp's (District 9, Elysium) third sci-fi film looks to take an entirely different approach to his previous two films, opting less for serious sci-fi action and instead a comic sci-fi drama narrative with brief spurts of action, if still probably as socially conscious as the director's prior works. Sharlto Copley plays the titular learning robot, Hugh Jackman is a former soldier out to capture him, and the cast is also rounded out by Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver. Why It'll Probably Deliver: Though Blomkamp's Elysium, which the writer-director penned himself, didn't quite live up to lofty expectations, Chappie sees Blomkamp re-team with District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell. Considering that they ended up nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar the last time they collaborated (and the film earned a Best Picture nomination), why can't the same be true for a movie that looks nothing if not fiercely original? Why It Might Not: It's entirely possible that Blomkamp is simply a "one and done" director in terms of masterpieces. Perhaps he's pulled an Orson Welles, peaking far too early and then destined to spend the rest of his career attempting to live up to that brilliance. In terms of box office, it's likely to be a hard sell, given the quirky tone of the film which doesn't seem as action-orientated as the director's two previous films, and questions surrounding the size of Jackman's role.
