13. Inside Out
The Hype: Pixar's most imaginative-sounding movie since 2009's Up, Inside Out examines the mental operations of a young girl, Riley, who is moved to San Francisco and has to deal with the array of conflicting emotions this brings out in her. In her mind, the emotions, Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith), all vie for control inside Headquarters. Why It'll Probably Deliver: Pixar haven't released a great film since 2010's Toy Story 3, so they're definitely overdue another 5-star classic, and with a premise this inventive, there's certainly plenty of potential to take it in a creative and deeply emotional direction. Given that Pete Docter's (Monsters Inc, Up) directing a script from Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3), complete with a wonderful voice cast, how can it possibly fail? Why It Might Not: All that gathered talent is no guaranteed recipe for success, though, and it's always possible that the mechanics of the HQ could just end up feeling a bit jumbled and silly, or it could force the emotion or make any number of narrative pit-falls that have beset Pixar's recent efforts. Fingers crossed, though.
