15 So-Called 'Must See' Films In 2015 (That Might Actually Be Worth Watching)
10. Ant-Man
The Hype: Marvel Studios' latest test to see what audiences will swallow down sees Peyton Reed (Bring It On, Yes Man) directing Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, the titular superhero, capable of shrinking himself to the size of an ant and commanding an army of insects. The supporting cast is stacked, including Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Evangeline Lilly as his daughter Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stoll as the villainous Yellowjacket, and Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Judy Greer and Martin Donovan in other, smaller roles. Why It'll Probably Deliver: At this point, Marvel can barely put a foot wrong: they have such a fine handle on the tone of their movies that, even when the villains aren't particularly astounding or the plot feels kinda familiar, they're just a lot of fun to watch. Given that the trailer released suggests a movie completely aware of its own potential lameness, it has every chance to be an amusingly subversive interpretation of the niche superhero. Why It Might Not: Director Edgar Wright quit the film for a reason, apparently because Marvel kept asking him to mold the script closer to fit in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than function as mostly standalone. What Adam McKay and Rudd have done to Wright and Joe Cornish's script with their new version will remain to be seen, but there's every chance it could weaken the surely brilliant foundation they had set up. Also, while the MCU hasn't had a flat-out flop yet, some film has to be the first eventually, and with a prospect this weird, maybe it'll be too much for audiences. A dude who can shrink himself isn't exactly as outrageously fun as a talking raccoon and giant tree monster now, is it?
