6. Casual Racism Everywhere - Blended
It's actually difficult to pick out just one scene from Adam Sandler's latest comedy Blended that's more insulting than the rest. The plot follows Jim (Sandler) and Lauren (Drew Barrymore) as they holiday in Africa with their families and, of course, come to fall for one another. Because it's set in Africa and it's a Sandler comedy, it has to take the most obvious, lowest common denominator approach to culture, with the movie's array of black supporting characters living up to every ridiculous, cartoonish stereotype you've ever seen or read of the continent. There's a little light relief in Terry Crews playing a wildly over-the-top holiday rep, but on the whole it's clear that this movie isn't so much a fun travel board advertisement for the country as it is a white man's conception of what they think Africa is like. The caricatures, the exaggerated accents, dances and music just make the movie even more painful and offensive to sit through for its bloated 117 minute runtime.
