15 Most Controversial Movies Of 2014

4. Noah's Depiction Of Evolution & Noah As A Drunk

Any movie of this biblical magnitude is going to be a magnet for controversy no matter what, and unsurprisingly, Darren Aronofsky's unconventional take on the tale of Noah's Ark attracted plenty of it long before it was even released. For starters, the director clashed with Paramount over the final cut of the movie, as they reportedly developed up to six alternate cuts of the movie (of varying degrees of "friendliness" to Bible Belt Christians), even if they ultimately did concede and allow Aronofsky's cut to be released. Once the film came out, though, the controversy intensified, with two particular scenes proving troubling: the Creation montage which appears to show the Big Bang and the process of evolution, and also the depiction of Noah as a drunk. Also, the movie's re-purposing of the story as an adventure flick complete with battle scenes did draw some ire. Still, on the whole, Aronofsky's film was a daring religious epic that was ultimately pretty pragmatic, broached between adapting the source material and updating it for a modern world. An admirable goal.
