15 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy The Dark Knight Trilogy

7. All The Romance Is Incredibly Sterile

One aspect of Nolan's filmmaking that's criticised both inside and outside of the Batman films is his absolutely detached, even sterile approach to romance. The various liaisons throughout the movies play as though written and directed by an alien lifeform who has never actually seen real, human warmth between two people, because though the PG-13 rating is restrictive as far as nudity goes, there's just no sexual tension or chemistry in any of the romantic set-ups, namely between Bruce and Rachel, Bruce and "Miranda", and then Bruce and Selina Kyle. Though the romances are hardly the most important aspect of any of the films, this is clearly an area where Nolan really struggles: the trysts end up feeling effortlessly tacked-on just because it's something on a blockbuster checklist, rather than something deeply felt and crucial to the characters. The Dark Knight Rises clearly attempted to address this with the Bruce-Miranda sex scene, though the result was a corny post-coital glimpse at their love-making session, complete with a fireplace and two silky robes. Cringe.
