9. Urotsukidji - Legend Of The Overfiend
Riding the tide of the huge retails success of their VHS release of Katsuhiro Otomo's exceptional animated masterpiece Akira, distributors Manga Video sought to establish themselves as the pre-eminent purveyors of adult-oriented anime with the release of Urotsukidji - Legend Of The Overfiend. Riding a fine line between horror fantasy and hentai, Urotsukidji tested the limits of the censors with its depiction of young, nubile (albeit animated) young girls being raped by giant tentacled demons. A notorious cause célèbre at the time of its release it's as silly as it is sensational, if devoid of substance and common sense. Fortunately for hardcore fans of anime (not fans of hardcore anime, whoever they are) Urotsukidji failed to set a low tone for the medium and after the gimmick of ultra-violent, sexually sadistic anime faded the market made way for more high quality examples of the genre. Still, as an insight into a certain kind of twisted adolescent mind it's a novelty piece worth checking out.
