15 Most Deranged Movie Psychopaths

4. Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange)

In what is undeniably the best performance of his long, active career, Malcolm McDowell did an exceptional job of capturing the central character of Anthony Burgess€™ classic novel. McDowell€™s natural charm served in hypnotising audiences to sympathise him; much like in the novel where readers act as Alex DeLarge€™s only confidant. Don€™t be fooled by his oozing charisma though €“ DeLarge€™s appallingly psychopathic actions make him as deserving of his place on this list as any. The unhinged protagonist of A Clockwork Orange belongs to one of the many street gangs terrorising the populous of an unnamed futuristic metropolis, engaging in lashings of the old ultraviolent, crasting plenty of cutter and doing the old in-out-in-out. Though he uses his street lingo (or Nadsat) to hide the brutality of his crimes, Alex engages in violent attacks on innocents, theft, gang rape and eventually murder. This may seem like fairly run-of-the-mill fare as far as psychopaths go but it is the unusual relationship the street urchin has with violence that makes him rather more deranged. DeLarge seems to experience an unnerving sexual pleasure from thinking about violence €“ this is particularly evident in the novel but Kubrick also makes it apparent by suggesting that McDowell€™s character is masturbating over the thought of gory acts in the scene where he first listens to his beloved Beethoven.
