Though both versions are highly deranged, it is Robert De Niros version of Max Cady which must get the nod for this list. From Rupert Pupkin to Travis Bickle to Jake LaMotta, De Niro has played his fair share of sociopaths and psychopaths in his career but Cady is without question the most terrifying of these men. The violent rapist is arguably the individual most consumed by a desire for vengeance in all of cinema. However, this vengeance is completely misplaced the psycho has an obsessive grudge with the attorney who sent him to prison for the rape he was guilty of. This vendetta manifests itself as he terrorises the attorney, Sam Bowden, and his family stalking his wife and even attempting to seduce his teenage daughter. Cadys unhinged actions force Bowden to operate outside of the law it is his duty to uphold. He first unsuccessfully attempts to offer his oppressor a heavy bride to leave him alone before hiring some goons to beat De Niros character to a pulp. No psychopath is truly imposing without some fighting skill and Cady is able to turn the tide on the three men and put a beating on them. This attempt by Sam to resort to violence only succeeds in angering the convicted rapist further if theres one thing worse than a deranged psychopath, its an enraged deranged psychopath.
