15 Devastating Pixar Movie Moments That Made You Cry
9. Holding Hands In The Furnace - Toy Story 3
At their very heart, Toy Story and its sequels are about community, family and belonging with the single most poignant threat being abandonment and isolation. In contrast, the highest value is placed on community and friendship (hence Woody being drawn to Al's collection and the toys wanting to remain at Sunnyside in the third movie). And never is that more clear than when the toys are facing death in the face.
Trapped in the furnace by Lotso's betrayal, all hope appears to be lost and rather than struggling in vein, the toys heart-breakingly choose to hold hands and comfort one another. It is the purest expression of everything that defined their characters throughout the trilogy.
It would have been incredibly brave for Pixar to end Toy Story 3 on a downer note by killing eh toys off, but that was never particularly likely. And even that didn't compromise the impact of seeing them resolved to accept their fates.
