15 Essential Horror Movies Since 2000 You Might've Missed

2. Wyrmwood

These days most horror filmmakers know that, if they're going to make yet another zombie movie, they need to put a new slant on it if audiences are going to engage. Wyrmwood's appeal comes from the fact that, in addition to the obvious love for zombie classics, the influence of Mad Max has been thrown in to give it that extra kick. The Road Warrior meets The Evil Dead, Wyrmwood balances action and horror without ever feeling as if it's pulling between the genres. It certainly helps that the performances are energetic and engaging, particularly Bianca Bradey's Brooke, who discovers she can control zombies with her thoughts after being injected with a strange serum. Shot on a budget of just $160,000, Wyrmwood proved to be an unexpected success in its native Australia, but further afield seems to have passed many people by - hopefully word of mouth since the home media release will see this get the attention it deserves.
