15 Essential Horror Movies Since 2000 You Might've Missed
12. Session 9
While Ti West made effective use of a creepy location in The House Of The Devil, the makers of the Session 9 - a truly sinister movie which gets right under your skin - took things one step further and filmed their movie entirely in the halls and rooms of a genuine abandoned lunatic asylum. Fine performances from Peter Mullan and David Caruso as asbestos removal men add to the psychological depth of the film, but it is the asylum itself which is the real star - the dirty corridors and discarded equipment scattered around Danvers State Hospital hint at the countless fractured minds which once dwelled within. Few films achieve such an underlying and pervasive sense of doom as effectively as Session 9 - if there's one thing scarier than a building full of ghosts, it's a building full of the ghosts of the insane.
