2. Tangerine

The advent of mobile phones capable of shooting high-definition footage might not have heralded a revolution in filmmaking, but if Tangerine is anything to go by, the format certainly has the potential to unleash a new wave of guerilla auteurs onto the cinematic landscape.

Shot using 3 iPhone 5S mobiles by Sean Baker, the 2015 film Tangerine follows the adventures of a transgender sex worker through the sun-drenched streets of LA. After discovering her pimp has been cheating on her, she sets out to confront him and reassert her validity in the community in which she lives and works. Tangerine is a movie full of restless energy and vitality which is rarely seen even in contemporary low-budget movies, shot through with moments of pure comedy.

As inspiring as Tangerine is for budding amateur filmmakers, it's also a testament to the trials and tribulations of life on the chaotic streets of Los Angeles for sex workers, and the friends and family in their lives; a lifestyle replete with highs, lows and the occasional moment of respite where nothing but the California sun exists.
