15 Films We’re Amazed That Hollywood Hasn’t Remade Already

2. Soylent Green

If I Am Legend had been a half decent film then I'm sure we would have seen a Soylent Green remake already. But because the Will Smith vehicle went so off course in the second half that there must be doubt in a potential viewers mind that another remake of a Charlton Heston film could stay the course. Mind you, I admit that I Am Legend was a film translation of the source material, as was The Omega Man €“ rather than Legend being a remake of the Heston film. Soylent Green is set in a dystopian future where meat is scarce and food is produced (the various coloured soylents) by machine. The planet is overpopulated and just doesn't have the resources €“ which of course are all very real fears today with overpopulation worries and of course the idea of machine grown food becoming a very real reality. Soylent Green is perhaps an even more valid premise today than when the film was first released. Soylent Green is an absolute classic. But that hasn't stopped the remake machine before. It is also a story that is still relevant today, and would easily work on the big screen. Unlike The Omega Man, Soylent Green is actually a good film (I'm sorry Omega Man fans, I read I Am Legend before I saw the film and couldn't get over the differences) and could be redrafted for a modern audience. In fact, I don't think they would need to do a great deal to it €“ other than perhaps push the setting back by another twenty years or so. Probability: Just waiting for some big director to decide that this is their next project.
