In the 1980s this was a film and a sequel (what, no trilogy? that'd never happen in today's market!) about a military robot named Johnnie Five that gains sentience and moves into live with a family. There is some fantastic scenes in both films with some really memorable moments I always remember him reading books super-fast and of course there's the scene in the sequel where he gets beaten half to death and repairs himself proper eighties montage stuff for the latter. I think that it's ripe for remaking after all, the military have bomb disposal robots that don't look too dissimilar to the bottom half of Johnny Five and his brothers, and we're seeing the Japanese develop robots very much with the upper body functions too. Whilst in the eighties it was meant to be very much a futuristic science fiction type film, these days it isn't so far off. In fact, the only two elements that haven't already been developed would be the artificial intelligence and the laser beams that the robots carried in the first film. So why should Hollywood remake this film? Well, it'd be easily marketable there would be toy lines with Johnny Five with a whole bunch of difference accessories, potentially computer game tie-ins and all the usual stuff. Plus they could go one of two ways if the first film is successful either make sequels or turn it into a cartoon series for the younger children. Heck, if it's really successful, they could do both. This would be a super easy reboot and probably easy money as it wouldn't require any named actors to sell it. Probability: Frankly, Hollywood is being lazy if it hasn't at least seriously considered remaking this. If Robocop turns out to be even remotely profitable then I'm sure we'll see Short Circuit within two years as the studios won't be afraid to redesign Johnny 5.
