15 Films We’re Amazed That Hollywood Hasn’t Remade Already

For those that haven't seen the film, it featured several small aliens (suggested in the film itself to be small spaceships themselves) which team up to save an apartment block from demolition. It came out in time for Christmas in 1987, and was written in part by Brad Bird who went on to do bigger things. It was a moderate success at the box office having been made for around $25 million, and made about $40 million in profit. So why am I surprised that there hasn't been a re-make yet? Well simply put, the aliens could be done a lot better using CGI now than they were back then. In addition, it has the potential for multiple films using the aliens (called the "fix-its" according to Wikipedia) in different situations. Plus for a film that would normally appeal to children, it has the obvious possibility of tie-in toy lines. Possibly the main problem with remaking the film is that the original had a great deal of elderly actors. This naturally would be replaced with a much younger cast in any remake after all, a film which appears to be Cocoon with tiny spaceships probably wouldn't translate into a highly profitable toy line. Probability: The main stumbling block would be the previous involvement of Steven Spielberg he presumably holds the rights, and may not want films attached to his back catalogue to be remade.
