15 Films Audiences Got Right (But Critics Got Wrong)

14. The Tree Of Life

Saw Cary Elwes
Fox Searchlight

Rotten Tomatoes: 84%

IMDb: 6.8

Cloud Atlas got mixed reviews, while this similarly pretentious and confusing film was critically acclaimed? That doesn't make any sense.

Forget The Last Jedi, this is the most divisive film of recent times. Many argue its a masterpiece, while others see it as complete rubbish. Both views are understandable; The Tree of Life is brilliantly acted, sometimes powerful and boasts some of the beautiful cinematography in film history, but it is also staggeringly dull, pretentious and its messages are overly difficult to decipher.

The IMDb rating reflects this polarized response far better than the Rotten Tomatoes score does and given how hard it often is to find anyone who actually like this, the 84% score is surprising. The themes of this movie (whatever they are) are presented in an exceptionally complicated way that's likely to leave viewers thinking "WTF?" instead of being moved.

Whether you love it or hate it, either view is understandable and audiences got this one right because their scores reflected the divisive nature of the film.

Should Be Rated: 55%-65%
