15 Films Audiences Got Right (But Critics Got Wrong)

7. Project X

Saw Cary Elwes
Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes: 28%

IMDb: 6.7

This one does have a valid reason for the divide. It's the story of the craziest house party imaginable which gets so nuts it destroys the neighborhood. It's a teenager's fantasy and since they were the target audience, they no doubt enjoyed it. It's also every parent's worst nightmare and, given that film critics are adults and many are no doubt parents themselves, they were probably horrified by it.

Project X is ugly, nonsensical and overall disposable, but it's not actually that bad and makes for gleefully exuberant depravity and an overall entertaining teen fantasy. Film critics were definitely not the target audience and them liking it less is understandable, but they were still unfair on it. Shouldn't critics try and review things objectively, whether it's a film aimed at them or not?

As a picture of excess, debauchery and teenage lunacy, this movie is a good bit of fun and while, as critics pointed out, the characters aren't that appealing, in this case that adds to the unhinged and insane vibe of the movie.

It's perfectly watchable and critics needed to remember that this wasn't a film aimed at them.

Should Be Rated: 45%-55%
