15 Films Critics Got Right (But Audiences Got Wrong)
2. Man On Fire
Rotten Tomatoes: 39% (Average rating: 5.2)
IMDb: 7.7
Here's a rating which destroys the credibility of IMDb altogether.
How on earth does Man on Fire have a 7.7? It's a three-star film at most and really isn't very good. It looks like it was filmed inside a rave, the action is very forgettable and after a solid first half the film declines into a monotonous, violent bore that wastes the great efforts of Denzel Washington and Dakota Fanning.
From this IMDb score you'd think Man on Fire is a great movie that's close to IMDb Top 250 territory. Luckily, in this case we have critics to inform us that it isn't a particularly great movie and the RT consensus states: "Man on Fire starts out well, but goes over the top in the violent second half." That couldn't be more accurate.
One can't help but wonder how on earth this got such high scores from IMDb voters. It might be enjoyable as an action film, but then again many action thrillers that are far, far superior to Man on Fire, such as Air Force One, Speed and The Equalizer, a far better Denzel Washington thriller, have lower scores (6.5, 7.2 and 7.2 respectively) than this. Alongside Kill List's 6.4, this is one of the worst ratings on the whole site.
Watch The Equalizer instead.
Should Be Rated: 6.2
